Where it comes from
Many cultures have linked precious and semi-precious stones to protection and healing, a tradition historians call lapidary medicine. Ancient Egyptians wore amulets for protection; medieval texts describe crystals said to ward off storms or the evil eye; and the Hopi of Arizona used quartz crystals in diagnosing illness. Historians note that ancient people often valued stones largely for their beauty and the way they shimmer like water.
Modern crystal healing took shape within the Western New Age movement, where it is often combined with Reiki, chakra work and other energy practices. Interest has grown again in recent years, with global retail sales of crystals estimated at over one billion US dollars a year by 2019.
The principle
Practitioners believe that each stone carries specific properties or 'vibrations', chosen by colour or type, and that placing them on the body (often on the chakras) can boost low energy, clear 'blocked' energy or support the aura and emotions.
There is no scientific basis for these claims, and no peer-reviewed evidence that crystals have healing effects. In a well-known study by psychologist Christopher French at Goldsmiths, University of London, 80 volunteers meditated holding either a real quartz crystal or a glass imitation: both groups reported the same tingling or warmth, especially those told what to expect. The sensations come from suggestion and expectation, which can still make a quiet ritual feel meaningful and relaxing.
What people come for
- To create a calm, focused moment of relaxation
- To use a stone as a personal reminder or meditation object
- To explore New Age and spiritual practices
- To enjoy the beauty of natural minerals
How it works on the body
You usually lie down clothed while smooth stones are placed on or around your body; the stones feel cool and slightly heavy.
A session, step by step
- 01
Conversation
The practitioner asks what you are looking for and may choose stones by colour or type.
- 02
Lying down
You lie down clothed, often with soft music and dim light.
- 03
Placing stones
Stones are placed on or around your body, or you hold one in your hands.
- 04
Resting
You rest or are guided through breathing or visualisation for a while.
- 05
Closing
Stones are removed and you have time to come back; some practitioners suggest a stone to keep.
Precautions
- Crystal healing does not treat any disease and must never replace medical or psychological care.
- If you are struggling with mental health, see a qualified professional; a crystal session is not a substitute.
- Do not swallow stones or drink 'crystal elixirs': some popular stones, such as shungite, can contain heavy metals.
- Be wary of expensive stones sold with health promises; mining for the crystal trade has also been linked to environmental damage and child labour, so ask where stones come from.
Complementary practice: does not replace medical advice.
In Thailand
In Thailand, crystals are widely sold in markets and shops, and crystal sessions are offered by independent energy practitioners and some wellness or retreat centres, often combined with Reiki or sound. We found no Thai licence or official standard for crystal healing; Thailand's recognised healing systems are Thai traditional medicine and Chinese medicine, with alternative medicine overseen by the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine. Treat crystal sessions as a relaxation or spiritual activity.
Frequently asked questions
Is there scientific evidence that crystals heal?
No. There is no peer-reviewed evidence that crystals have healing effects. In Christopher French's study, people holding fake crystals reported the same sensations as those holding real ones, showing that the effects come from suggestion and expectation (the placebo effect).
Then why do some people feel better?
Taking quiet time, focusing attention and expecting to feel better can genuinely make people feel calmer. That is a real experience, but it does not come from the stone itself.
Are crystals safe?
Holding or wearing them is generally harmless. Avoid ingesting them or drinking water they have soaked in, as some stones contain toxic metals.
Do I need to buy crystals?
No. A session uses the practitioner's stones. Be cautious if you are pressured to buy expensive stones as part of a 'treatment'.
