Yoga is an ancient and complex practice rooted in Indian philosophy. It began as a spiritual practice and has since become popular worldwide as a way to support physical and mental well-being.
The yoga most people meet in studios today usually combines physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation. Many different styles exist, ranging from slow and gentle classes to vigorous, athletic ones, including heated "hot yoga".
Dedicated studios grew with this global popularity. The Global Wellness Institute counts yoga studios among the businesses that wellness travellers use, alongside spas, gyms and retreats.
A class links movement with steady breathing and focused attention. Moving through postures builds strength, flexibility and balance, while breathing and relaxation at the end of class encourage a calmer state of mind.
Studios offer a teacher's guidance, a shared rhythm and a quiet room, which many beginners find easier than practising alone at home.
Yoga works through postures, breath and attention; research suggests it may help with stress, sleep and balance, though many studies are small.
Choose a class
Studios list classes by style and level; beginners do best in classes labelled gentle, beginner or all levels.
Arrive and set up
Arrive a little early, tell the teacher about injuries or pregnancy, and set up a mat and any props such as blocks or straps.
Warm-up and breathing
Classes usually begin with breathing and gentle movement to settle in.
Postures
The teacher guides a sequence of postures, offering easier or harder options.
Final relaxation
Most classes end lying down in stillness or with a short meditation.
Complementary practice: does not replace medical advice.
Yoga studios are found in Thailand's main cities and tourist areas, and yoga is also offered inside spas and retreats: Thai Ministry of Public Health rules for health spas list yoga and meditation among the optional services a licensed spa may provide. We did not find a licence category specific to stand-alone yoga studios in the sources we consulted, so ask about the teacher's training. Thailand also has its own traditional self-stretching exercise, ruesi dat ton ("hermit" exercises), taught for example at the Siriraj Center of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine.
No. Classes offer easier variations, and flexibility is something yoga works on rather than a requirement.
Styles range from gentle to very demanding. Start with a class labelled beginner or gentle, and avoid hot yoga until you know how your body responds.
Comfortable clothes and water. Many studios lend mats and props; check when you book.
Generally yes, with precautions: get advice from your health provider first, avoid hot yoga, and avoid long periods lying on your back.
