What Khao Phansa commemorates
The day after Asanha Bucha, monks commit to staying in the same monastery for the three months of the rainy season to study and meditate. The custom goes back to the Buddha's time, when monks avoided trampling the rice fields while travelling.
What people do on the day
People offer temples large Lent candles (tian phansa) and rain-bathing cloths. Many lay people make a pledge for the three months, the best known being to give up alcohol (ngot lao khao phansa).
Khao Phansa is a public holiday for government offices, but not a bank holiday: banks and most private companies stay open.
Alcohol sales are banned on Khao Phansa, with exceptions (international airport terminals, registered hotels and licensed entertainment venues), under the Prime Minister's Office notice of 2025.
How the date is set
Khao Phansa falls every year on waning day 1, 8th month. Because the Thai lunar year has 354 days, the calendar date moves 11 days earlier from one year to the next, then about 19 days later in adhikamat years, when an extra eighth month is added.
In adhikamat years, the festival moves one lunar month later: waning day 1, second 8th month.
Khao Phansa dates from 2027 to 2034
Dates computed from the Thai lunar calendar and checked against the official calendar up to 2027. For later years, a one-day difference remains possible.
