Stick 12 of 28
The river in flood
Caution
A stick that advises slowing down and thinking before acting. It does not announce misfortune.
The verse
The waters climb the banks, the current sweeps the bridge away;do not cross tonight, the flood will ease by day.
General meaning
A stick of caution: excess and overflow. Tradition advises not to commit until things have settled.
Reading by area
Overload and emergencies: refuse what you cannot hold and protect your time.
Do not lend, borrow or invest on impulse; losses come from haste.
Words run ahead of thought; wait for anger to subside before you decide.
Slow down, drink water, sleep. If a symptom gets worse, see a professional quickly.
This reading never replaces the advice of a doctor or health professional.
Take care on water and on the road, especially in bad weather; postpone if possible.
Not the time to start proceedings; try to calm things first.
The stick's advice
Stay on high ground: nothing important is decided during a flood.
By custom
A slip of caution is not taken home: at the temple it is left behind. You may shake a second time; and if you dislike the result, Buddhist tradition invites you to make merit (ทำบุญ) and act with more care, since in this belief deeds matter more than a slip of paper.
Confirm with the crescents (ไม้ปวย)
In Chinese shrines, two red wooden half-moons are thrown to see whether the answer is confirmed.
Majority reading from Thai guides; some temples have their own customs.
