Where it comes from
Human Design was created by Alan Robert Krakower, born in Montreal, Canada, in 1948, who later took the name Ra Uru Hu. He moved to the Spanish island of Ibiza in the 1980s, where he worked as a school teacher.
According to his own account, in January 1987 he had a sudden mystical experience and an encounter with 'a Voice' over eight days and nights, during which he says he received the system. He published The Human Design System in 1992. He taught it until his death in Ibiza in March 2011.
The system presents itself as a synthesis of astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah, Vedic philosophy and ideas borrowed from modern physics; one theologian has called it a 'transreligious project'.
The principle
From your date, time and place of birth, a chart called a bodygraph is calculated. It looks like a horoscope placed on an outline of the body: the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching are mapped onto the body, along with nine energy centres that may be 'defined' or not.
Practitioners sort people into types, Manifestor, Generator, Projector, Reflector, and sometimes Manifesting Generator as a fifth, each with a recommended 'strategy' for making decisions. A reading explains your type, centres and strategy and how they might apply to work and relationships.
What people come for
- Self-knowledge and personal reflection
- Thinking about how one makes decisions
- Questions about work style and energy levels
- Understanding relationships and differences between people
- Curiosity after seeing it online
How it works on the body
Human Design is experienced as a reflective reading of a personal chart, not as a physical practice.
A session, step by step
- 01
Provide birth data
You give your date, exact time and place of birth so the chart can be calculated.
- 02
Agree on price and format
Check the fee, length and whether the reading is online or in person.
- 03
Chart generation
The practitioner generates your bodygraph with software.
- 04
Type and strategy
They explain your type, defined centres and suggested decision-making strategy.
- 05
Questions and reflection
You discuss how it resonates with your life; keep a critical, open mind.
Precautions
- Do not use your type or chart to make medical, financial or legal decisions; consult qualified professionals.
- Be cautious with expensive courses, certifications or ongoing coaching sold on the promise of life transformation.
- Personality descriptions can feel accurate simply because they are general and flattering.
- Avoid labelling yourself or others in rigid ways based on a chart.
- If you are struggling emotionally, a mental health professional is the right first contact.
Complementary practice: does not replace medical advice.
In Thailand
Human Design has no traditional roots in Thailand: it is a recent system created in Europe in 1987. Where it is found in Thailand, it belongs to the international wellness and coaching scene rather than to Thai cultural practices such as Thai astrology or fortune telling.
