Where it comes from

Numerology is defined as the belief in an occult, divine or mystical relationship between numbers and events or ideas. It also covers giving numerical values to the letters of names and words, a practice related to gematria. Assigning numbers to words dates back to antiquity: an Assyrian inscription from the 8th century BCE is an early example, and Aristotle reported that the Pythagorean tradition practised isopsephy, the Greek counterpart of gematria.

The older word 'arithmancy' (number divination) appears in English in the 1570s, while 'numerology' is not recorded before about 1907. In the so-called Pythagorean method used in modern Western numerology, the letters of the Latin alphabet are given values from 1 to 9.

Other cultures have their own number beliefs. In Chinese culture, 8 is considered lucky because it sounds like the word for 'prosper', 9 because it sounds like 'long-lasting', and 4 is avoided in Cantonese because it sounds like 'death'.

02

The principle

Numerologists believe that numbers derived from your name or date of birth reveal character traits and life tendencies, and that some numbers are lucky or unlucky. In Thai astrology, numerology and omens play a larger role than in Western astrology.

A consultation usually involves calculating numbers from your birth date and name, then interpreting them. Practitioners may suggest a new name spelling, a phone number or a date whose numbers they consider favourable.

What people come for

  • Choosing or changing a name
  • Picking an auspicious date
  • Self-reflection about personality
  • Curiosity about number symbolism
03

How it works on the body

Numerology is experienced as a reflective, symbolic reading of numbers in one's life, not as a physical practice.

  • Number readings often contain general statements that fit almost anyone.
  • Gambling on 'lucky numbers' can lead to serious losses; set strict limits.

In Thailand

Number beliefs are very visible in Thailand. Thai astrology itself gives an important place to numerology, and fortune tellers offer it alongside palm reading and astrology. Some people look for numbers in tree trunks or clouds before buying lottery tickets. The Department of Land Transport auctions lucky licence plates: in 2022 the plate '9กก 9999' sold for a record 45.09 million baht, with the department explaining that 9 evokes 'stepping forward' in Thai and prosperity in Chinese tradition.

Frequently asked questions

Is numerology scientifically proven?

No. There is no scientific evidence that numbers influence personality or destiny. The feeling that a reading fits you is largely explained by our tendency to accept general descriptions as personal. In science, calling a theory 'numerology' is even used to criticise it as questionable.

Why is 9 lucky in Thailand?

The Thai word for nine sounds like a word meaning 'to step forward', and 9 is also linked to prosperity in Chinese tradition.

Did Pythagoras invent numerology?

Not exactly. The Pythagorean tradition practised number–letter symbolism, but similar practices existed earlier, and modern numerology is a much later development.

Should I change my name for luck?

It is a personal choice. Consider the legal and practical consequences first, and do not let anyone pressure you into it.
