Start of the year

Chinese tradition changes animal at the lunar New Year; many Thais simply count the calendar year, and traditional Thai astrology changes at the Thai New Year in April. Only births from January to April are affected.

2026 is the year of the Fire Horse. The year of the Goat begins on 6 February 2027.

ปีชง 2026: the signs to take care of this year

A very popular Sino-Thai tradition: each year, the animal opposite the year's animal is “in conflict” (ชง), and three others partially. Chinese temples then offer an appeasement rite (แก้ชง).

Direct conflict (ชงเต็ม): Rat

Partial conflict (ชงร่วม): Horse Ox Rabbit

Popular belief, not science: no demonstrated link with what happens in the year.

How it works

  1. The Chinese zodiac gives each lunar year one of twelve animals, always in the same order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. The same twelve animals structure the Thai calendar (ปีนักษัตร), with different Thai names, and Thais readily ask “what is your animal?” to guess someone's age.

  2. To the animal is added one of five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), which changes every two years, and a yin or yang polarity that alternates each year. The full 60-year cycle combines both: 2026 is the year of the Fire Horse, which will not return until 2086.

  3. The lunar year does not start on 1 January but at Chinese New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice, between 21 January and 20 February. Someone born on 3 February 2000 therefore still belongs to the year of the Rabbit, not the Dragon (New Year fell on 5 February that year): this tool calculates that date for every year.

  4. “Allies” are the two animals four places away on the cycle, said to share a trine; the “secret friend” is the complementary animal; the animal six places away is the opposite. These pairings are popular tradition, not science: take them as a mirror game.

Frequently asked questions

I was born in January or February. What is my sign?
It depends on the exact date of Chinese New Year that year. Before that date you belong to the previous year. The tool works it out: enter your full date.
Is the Thai zodiac the same?
Yes, the twelve animals are the same, with Thai names (ชวด, ฉลู, ขาล…). The Thai calendar traditionally starts the year at Songkran (mid-April) or on 1 January depending on usage; this tool follows the Chinese convention.
What does “the year of my sign” mean?
Every twelve years the year carries your animal (ben ming nian). Tradition sees it as a year of change to approach with care; wearing red is the popular remedy.
Are signs compatible in love?
Tradition proposes affinities (allies, secret friend) and oppositions, but no study confirms them. They mostly serve as a way to talk about yourself and the other person.
