How it works

  1. Grams of pure alcohol are calculated as: volume in ml × strength × 0.789 (the density of ethanol), divided by 100. A 330 ml can of 5% beer therefore holds 13 g, or 1.3 standard drinks; a large Thai 620 ml bottle, 24 g, almost 2.5 drinks.

  2. The Thai and WHO “standard drink” is 10 g of pure alcohol; a UK unit is 8 g and a US standard drink 14 g. Drinks served in bars are often larger than these references.

  3. The liver clears on average 1 standard drink per hour, a little less in women and lighter people. Coffee, a shower or sleep do not speed it up: only time does. In Thailand the legal driving limit is 0.5 g/l (0.2 g/l for drivers under 20 or without a full licence).

  4. The calories shown count alcohol only (7 kcal per gram): sweet beers, cocktails and mixers add a lot more.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a 620 ml Thai beer?
At 5%, about 24 g of pure alcohol, almost 2.5 standard drinks: on its own it exceeds the daily guideline for men.
Are the guidelines the same for everyone?
No. They are indicative for a healthy adult. During pregnancy, before driving, with certain medicines or liver disease, the only safe limit is zero.
How long before I can drive?
Allow at least one hour per standard drink after your last drink, plus a margin. After an evening of 5 drinks, the next morning can still be over the legal limit.
Who can I contact if I worry about my drinking?
Your doctor, or in Thailand the 1413 line (free, confidential), which points to support services, mainly in Thai.
