Thai birth element

How it works

  1. Traditional Thai medicine (การแพทย์แผนไทย) sees the body as a blend of four elements: earth (ปถวีธาตุ, 20 parts such as bones, flesh and organs), water (อาโปธาตุ, 12 parts such as blood, lymph and mucus), wind (วาโยธาตุ, 6 movements such as breathing and circulation) and fire (เตโชธาตุ, 4 kinds of heat, including the one that digests food). In each person one of the four leads from birth: this is the ธาตุเจ้าเรือน (that chao ruean), literally the element that is master of the house.

  2. For the birth month, the majority convention, used by Thailand's Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM) and widely quoted in the Thai health press, follows the solar calendar: January to March for fire, April to June for wind, July to September for water, October to December for earth. Teaching manuals rely on the Thai lunar month (เดือนไทย) instead: months 2 to 4 for fire, 5 to 7 for wind, 8 to 10 for water, and 11, 12 and 1 for earth. The tool shows both and tells you when they differ.

  3. Because lunar month N falls roughly within solar month N-1, the two conventions agree for most dates and only split for births close to the end of a quarter. Your lunar month is worked out in your browser from the new moon before your birth and the sidereal position of the Sun, the method the Thai calendar comes from. The official calendar sometimes doubles the eighth month (อธิกมาส), so the result is an approximation, and you can enter your exact lunar month if you know it.

  4. The birth element (ธาตุเจ้าเรือนเกิด) is only a starting point. Practitioners also assess your current element (ธาตุเจ้าเรือนปัจจุบัน) from your actual constitution: build, skin, hair, appetite, bowel habits, sleep, voice and temperament. The quiz covers these signs in twelve questions and charts the share of each element. A result that differs from your birth element is common, because age, where you live, the season and your habits all shift the balance.

  5. Each element has its tastes (รสยา). Tradition counts nine (astringent, sweet, toxin-clearing bitter, bitter, hot and spicy, oily, fragrant and cooling, salty, sour), plus bland. In the most widely used table, earth thrives on astringent, sweet, oily and salty; water on sour and bitter; wind on hot and spicy; fire on bitter, cooling and bland. The tool also shows the current Thai season, the element linked to your age (อายุสมุฏฐาน) and the element of the hour (กาลสมุฏฐาน).

  6. Sources: DTAM and Thai Traditional Medicine Institute materials (based on classical texts such as คัมภีร์ปฐมจินดา and คัมภีร์สมุฏฐานวินิจฉัย), articles by PPTV (April 2022, citing DTAM and Mahidol University) and Thansettakij (October 2025, interview with the director of the Thai Traditional Medicine Institute), and a Thai medicine health promotion course from Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University for the lunar months. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. These are traditional guidelines, not medical advice.

These tools give general information. They do not replace the advice of a doctor or a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my ธาตุเจ้าเรือน from my birth month?
Under the most common convention: born January to March, fire element; April to June, wind; July to September, water; October to December, earth. Manuals that count in Thai lunar months almost always give the same answer, and the tool checks both for you.
Why are there two different conventions?
Classical texts count in Thai lunar months, while public health campaigns simplified them into quarters of the solar calendar. The two overlap to within two to four weeks. If you were born near a boundary (late March, late June, late September, late December), look at both results and at the quiz.
What is the difference between the birth element and the current element?
The birth element (ธาตุเจ้าเรือนเกิด) comes from your date of birth and never changes. The current element (ธาตุเจ้าเรือนปัจจุบัน) is read from your build, temperament and present complaints, so the two often differ: your constitution today also depends on age, climate, work, diet and sleep. Thai practitioners take both into account, and the quiz element usually guides day to day advice.
What should I eat for my element?
According to tradition: earth, astringent, sweet, oily and salty tastes in moderation (guava, pumpkin, taro, beans, sesame); water, sour and bitter (lime, young tamarind leaves, pea eggplant, neem shoots); wind, hot and spicy (galangal, lemongrass, ginger, holy basil); fire, bitter, cooling and bland (bitter gourd, cassia leaves, winter melon, cucumber, gotu kola). Keep your diet varied.
Which massage suits my element?
Practitioners often suggest traditional Thai massage with hot herbal compresses (ลูกประคบ) for wind, a Thai herbal steam (อบสมุนไพร) for water, firmer muscle work plus exercise for earth, and gentle treatments without too much heat for fire. Ask a qualified practitioner, especially if you are pregnant, have high blood pressure or a chronic condition.
Can my birth element diagnose an illness?
No. It is a traditional guide to know yourself better and adjust your habits, not a diagnosis. See a doctor for any lasting symptom, and for an assessment in Thai medicine, visit a licensed Thai traditional medicine practitioner (แพทย์แผนไทย).
Is my result saved?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. If you share the link, your date and answers are only included in the page address.
