Thai Birth Day and Buddha of the Day

In Thailand, the weekday you were born on matters almost as much as the date itself: it gives you a color, a Buddha posture, a ruling planet and the chant you recite at the temple. Enter your birth date (and the time, if you know it): the tool finds your day using the Thai convention, Wednesday night included, and gathers everything tradition links to it in a card you can keep or share.

Thai Birth Day and Buddha of the Day

How it works

  1. The weekday is computed straight from the date, for any birth between 1900 and 2100, without sending anything to a server. In Thai, the year is shown in the Buddhist Era (พ.ศ.), which runs 543 years ahead of the Western calendar: 1990 is 2533.

  2. Thai astrology does not change days at midnight but at sunrise, set by convention at 6 a.m. Someone born on a Tuesday at 3 a.m. is therefore, by tradition, still a Monday child. The tool applies this rule by default and lets you switch back to the calendar day if you prefer. Wednesday is split in two: from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. it is Wednesday (day), ruled by Mercury; from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Thursday it is Wednesday night (พุธกลางคืน), ruled by Rahu, which gives eight birth days instead of seven.

  3. Each day has its own Buddha image in a specific posture (ปาง) taken from an episode of his life: standing and gazing at the Bodhi tree on Sunday, raising a hand to calm his relatives on Monday, reclining on Tuesday, holding the alms bowl on Wednesday, in the Pārileyyaka forest on Wednesday night, meditating on Thursday, contemplating with crossed arms on Friday, sheltered by the naga on Saturday. For Monday, a few temples show the posture "calming the ocean", with both hands raised; we use the more common one, with the right hand raised.

  4. The ruling planet, day number and day strength come from the ทักษา wheel, the order of the eight celestial bodies in Thai astrology: Sun 1, Moon 2, Mars 3, Mercury 4, Saturn 7, Jupiter 5, Rahu 8, Venus 6. Starting from your day, the wheel hands out eight roles (circle, life, power, prosperity, roots, effort, supporters, obstacle). The last one, กาลกิณี (kalakini), gives the color to avoid and the letters tradition advises against in a name.

  5. The chant (katha) of your day's Buddha is a Pali text taken from the paritta, the protective recitations of the Buddhist canon. It is recited as many times as the day's strength: 6 times on Sunday, 15 on Monday, 8 on Tuesday, 17 on Wednesday, 12 on Wednesday night, 19 on Thursday, 21 on Friday and 10 on Saturday. We give the text in Thai script and in romanized Pali, as printed in common prayer books, with a counter to keep track.

  6. Sources: day colors and postures as listed by the Thairath newspaper (beliefs section) and Silpa Wattanatham magazine (ศิลปวัฒนธรรม) for Wednesday night, ทักษา tables from Thai astrology handbooks, and the Pali paritta texts (Jātaka, Saṃyutta Nikāya, Majjhima Nikāya). Where schools differ, the tool follows the majority version and says so. These are cultural beliefs and are presented as such.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out which day of the week I was born?
Enter your birth date in the tool: it works out the weekday for any date between 1900 and 2100 and shows it with the Buddhist Era year. If you were born on a Wednesday or before 6 a.m., add the time, as it can change your day under the Thai convention.
What is Wednesday night (พุธกลางคืน)?
Thai astrology counts eight days: Wednesday is shared between Mercury, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Rahu, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Thursday. People born in that window are "Wednesday night" children: their Buddha is the Pārileyyaka forest image, their number is 8 and their chant is recited 12 times.
I was born between midnight and 6 a.m. What is my day?
In Thai astrology the day starts at sunrise, set at 6 a.m., so you still belong to the previous day. A baby born on a Thursday at 2 a.m. is counted as a Wednesday night child. The tool applies this rule by default; you can choose the calendar day if your family counts differently.
Which Buddha image belongs to my birth day?
Sunday: gazing at the Bodhi tree (ปางถวายเนตร). Monday: calming his relatives (ปางห้ามญาติ). Tuesday: reclining (ปางไสยาสน์). Wednesday: holding the alms bowl (ปางอุ้มบาตร). Wednesday night: in the Pārileyyaka forest (ปางป่าเลไลยก์). Thursday: meditating (ปางสมาธิ). Friday: contemplating (ปางรำพึง). Saturday: sheltered by the naga (ปางนาคปรก).
How many times should I recite my birth day chant?
Tradition says as many times as the day's strength (กำลังวัน): 6 on Sunday, 15 on Monday, 8 on Tuesday, 17 on Wednesday, 12 on Wednesday night, 19 on Thursday, 21 on Friday, 10 on Saturday. Many people recite it in front of their day's Buddha image, at the temple or at home, with an offering of flowers.
What are kalakini (กาลกิณี) letters?
They are the letters of the celestial body that sits in the obstacle position of your ทักษา wheel. Thai naming tradition advises against using them in a first name, nickname or business name. The tool lists them and can check a name written in Thai.
Do I really have to avoid my unlucky color?
It is a popular belief, not a rule: many Thais simply avoid that color for a job interview, a wedding or a ceremony and wear it freely the rest of the time. No color has any proven effect on luck or health.
