Auspicious Thai name

Type a name in Thai script and pick the birth day: every letter takes its place in the Taksa wheel, the kalakini letters to avoid stand out, the name's sum is read in the 1 to 100 table, and the tool suggests syllables and names with no unfavourable letter. Everything runs in your browser.

Before you choose

  1. Check the exact Thai spelling: a single letter changes both the Taksa and the sum.
  2. Rule out kalakini letters first, then look for a det, sri or montri first letter.
  3. Always work out the sum with the surname: it is the main reading.
  4. A name's meaning matters as much as the rules: choose one the child will be happy to carry.
  5. For an official name change, ask the civil registration office of your district.

Taksa and Thai numerology are traditional Thai beliefs, shown here for cultural interest. Schools differ on some points; no reading guarantees luck, success or health.

Auspicious Thai name

How it works

  1. Taksa (ทักษา, from the ทักษาปกรณ์ treatise) is the traditional Thai rule for choosing a name. The eight planets of Thai astrology sit on a circle in a fixed order: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu, Venus. Each rules a group of letters: the vowels and อ for the Sun, ก ข ค ฆ ง for the Moon, จ ฉ ช ซ ฌ ญ for Mars, ฎ ฏ ฐ ฑ ฒ ณ for Mercury, ด ต ถ ท ธ น for Saturn, บ ป ผ ฝ พ ฟ ภ ม for Jupiter, ย ร ล ว for Rahu and ศ ษ ส ห ฬ ฮ for Venus.

  2. The birth day sets the starting point: its planet is boriwan (your circle), then you move round the wheel in order: ayu (life, health), det (prestige), sri (luck, charm), mula (assets), utsaha (effort), montri (support, protection) and finally kalakini, the group to avoid. People born on a Wednesday after 6 pm follow Rahu (Wednesday night). The kalakini letters we show for each day come from the table published by Thairath, which matches the other sources we checked: for example ศ ษ ส ห ฬ ฮ for Sunday, and all vowels plus อ for Monday.

  3. Tone marks, mai tai khu (็) and the karan sign (์) belong to no planet: they stay out of the Taksa reading but count in the sum. In the Taksa we count every written letter, including the one silenced by the karan: it is the most cautious reading, but some schools ignore silent letters, so an option lets you leave them out. Mai han-akat (ั) is treated as a vowel, as in most handbooks.

  4. For Thai numerology (เลขศาสตร์), each character is worth 1 to 9 according to the most widely used table (thaibabyname.com, Dumex, and insurers' articles on licence plates): ก ด ถ ท ภ ฤ = 1, ข ช ง บ ป = 2, ฆ ต ฑ ฒ = 3, ค ธ ญ ร ษ = 4, ฉ ฌ ณ น ม ห ฎ ฮ ฬ = 5, จ ล ว อ = 6, ซ ศ ส = 7, ผ ฝ พ ฟ ย = 8, ฏ ฐ = 9, plus vowels and signs (า = 1, เ = 2, ั = 4, ี = 7, ์ = 9…). We add up the first name, the surname, then both; the combined sum is the main reading.

  5. The sum is read in a 1 to 100 table (ความหมายเลขศาสตร์ 1 ถึง 100). Thai websites do not all grade every number the same way, so we compared several tables (Thairath, name websites, insurers' articles) and kept the majority grading, the same one our lucky licence plate tool uses, on four levels summarised in our own words: very favourable, favourable, mixed, unfavourable. The most sought-after sums (14, 15, 19, 24, 36, 41, 42, 45, 50, 51, 54, 55, 56, 59) are agreed on by all. Above 100, we read the root of the sum. The table is a guide, not an absolute rule.

  6. The score out of 100 sums these readings up with a simple, fully displayed scale: the combined sum, no kalakini letter in the first name (the surname, which you don't choose, weighs much less), a det, sri or montri first letter, and the other favourable letters. Name suggestions come from a small list we wrote ourselves, filtered by the engine for the chosen day; they are a starting point for a family talk, not a verdict.

These tools give general information. They do not replace the advice of a doctor or a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose an auspicious Thai name for a birth day?
By tradition, you first avoid the kalakini letters of the birth day, then favour det, sri and montri letters, especially for the first letter, and check that the first name plus surname adds up to a favourable number. The tool runs these three checks and suggests syllables and names that pass them.
What are the kalakini letters for each day?
Sunday: ศ ษ ส ห ฬ ฮ. Monday: อ and all vowels. Tuesday: ก ข ค ฆ ง. Wednesday daytime: จ ฉ ช ซ ฌ ญ. Wednesday night: บ ป ผ ฝ พ ฟ ภ ม. Thursday: ด ต ถ ท ธ น. Friday: ย ร ล ว. Saturday: ฎ ฏ ฐ ฑ ฒ ณ.
Can someone born on a Monday really use no vowels at all?
Under Taksa, written vowels are kalakini for Monday. Monday-born names are therefore often written without vowel signs, with implied vowels, such as ธนกร or กนกพร. Some practitioners allow mai han-akat; the tool applies the strict rule and tells you so.
I was born on a Wednesday evening: which day should I pick?
Tradition splits Wednesday in two: from 6 am to 5:59 pm it is Wednesday (Mercury); from 6 pm it is Wednesday night, ruled by Rahu, with its own kalakini letters (บ ป ผ ฝ พ ฟ ภ ม). If you know your birth time, enter it in the date helper: for a birth before 6 am, the tool also shows the traditional reading, in which the day starts at sunrise.
What is a good sum for a Thai name?
The most sought-after sums are 14, 15, 19, 24, 36, 41, 42, 45, 46, 50, 51, 54, 55, 56, 59 and 63, which the table rates as very favourable or favourable. The sum of first name and surname together matters most. These are cultural guides, not a guarantee.
Does the surname count?
For the sum, yes: the main reading adds first name and surname. For kalakini letters, tradition mostly looks at the first name, which you choose; a kalakini letter in the surname is flagged but carries little weight in the score.
How do you change your first name in Thailand?
You apply at the civil registration office of the district (amphoe or khet) where your house registration is held, with your ID card and tabien baan, under the Personal Names Act B.E. 2505 (1962). Check with your office for the documents required.
