Well-being self-assessment

How it works

  1. The WHO-5 Well-Being Index was created by the World Health Organization in 1998. Its five questions cover mood, calm, energy, rest and interest in daily life over the last two weeks. Each answer scores from 0 (at no time) to 5 (all of the time); the total out of 25 is multiplied by 4 to give a score from 0 to 100.

  2. It is one of the most used and best validated well-being questionnaires in the world, translated into more than 30 languages including Thai. It is short, positively worded (it does not ask you to describe symptoms) and sensitive to change: taking it monthly lets you follow a trend.

  3. A score under 50 indicates reduced well-being; a score of 28 or less warrants, according to WHO, depression screening by a professional. The test makes no diagnosis: it simply invites you to look closer.

  4. Your answers stay in your browser: nothing is sent or stored.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good score?
The average among adults in the general population is around 60 to 70. Above 50, well-being is considered preserved; below, it deserves attention.
Does a low score mean I am depressed?
No. The WHO-5 measures well-being, not depression. A low score can come from a period of tiredness, stress or grief. It signals that talking to a professional would help, nothing more.
How often should I retake the test?
Every 2 to 4 weeks if you are going through a hard time or have changed something (sleep, activity, support): the change in score says more than a single measure.
What if I feel bad right now?
Talk to someone today. In Thailand the 1323 line is free and open 24/7; in immediate danger, call 1669.
