Moon phases

How it works

  1. The Moon orbits the Earth in 29.5 days (the synodic month): the phase depends on the angle between Moon and Sun as seen from Earth. At 0° it is new and invisible; at 180° it is full. This tool computes that angle with Jean Meeus's astronomical formulas, to within about an hour, right in your browser.

  2. The eight phases always follow the same order: new, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent. In the northern hemisphere, Thailand included, the lit side of a waxing Moon is on the right.

  3. The Moon's effects on sleep are documented but modest: a 2013 Swiss study measured 20 minutes less sleep and a longer time to fall asleep around the full moon, regardless of bedroom light. On mood, births or accidents, large studies find no effect.

  4. In Thailand the lunar calendar sets the rhythm of religious life: Buddhist holy days (wan phra) fall on the quarters and on full and new moons, and major festivals such as Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha or Loy Krathong are fixed on the full moon.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the full moon not on the same day everywhere?
The exact moment of the full moon is unique, but in local time it can fall late in the evening on one side of the globe and the next morning on the other. This tool uses your device's time.
What is a blue moon?
The second full moon within one calendar month, which happens about every two and a half years, because a lunation (29.5 days) is shorter than most months.
Does the Moon really affect sleep?
Slightly, according to several studies: a little less deep sleep and slower falling asleep around the full moon, even without outside light. The effect is far smaller than coffee, screens or stress.
How are Buddhist holy days worked out?
From the Thai lunar calendar, where months have 29 or 30 days with intercalary months. The astronomical phases shown here are very close, but the official date can differ by a day.
