How it works

   The tool stacks three layers of rules, all public and computable without an astrologer: the year's กาลโยค, which names the lucky and unlucky days of the week; the day of the Thai lunar calendar (ดิถี, วันพระ, lunar month); and, if you give your day of birth, where the day falls in your ทักษา. Each rule adds or removes points, and the total ranks the day on six levels, from "excellent" to "avoid". Strong rules (วันอุบาทว์, วันโลกาวินาศ, your own กาลกิณี day) override the rest: such a day is never offered among the three best. A day that is both lucky and unlucky in the กาลโยค (Monday in 2026) is rated "mixed"; your กาลกิณี day and a Wednesday haircut stay "avoid" no matter what.

   The กาลโยค ("union of times") is computed once a year from the Chula Sakarat year (จ.ศ. = Buddhist year minus 1181), using the formulas of ทองเจือ อ่างแก้ว's Thai astrological almanac as given in the Thai Wikipedia article "กาลโยค": ธงชัย starts from (CS × 10) + 3, อธิบดี from the remainder of CS ÷ 498, อุบาทว์ from (CS × 10) + 2 and โลกาวินาศ from CS + 1120. Each base, divided by 7, 8, 27, 12 and 30, gives the weekday, the ยาม, the ฤกษ์, the ราศี and the ดิถี. The กาลโยค changes on เถลิงศก day, around 16 April. For CS 1388 (16 April 2026 to 15 April 2027), Monday is both ธงชัย and โลกาวินาศ, Saturday is อธิบดี and Sunday อุบาทว์: our results match the tables published by the Thai press.

   The lunar calendar is the one from our Buddhist holy days tool (สุริยยาตร rules, months of 29 and 30 days, leap months and leap days). Three ดิถี are read from it. The ดิถีมหาสิทธิโชค, "great success", depends on the weekday: the 14th lunar day on a Sunday, the 12th on a Monday, the 13th on a Tuesday, the 4th on a Wednesday, the 7th on a Thursday, the 10th on a Friday and the 15th on a Saturday, waxing or waning (table by "พลูหลวง", การให้ฤกษ์ฉบับง่าย). The ดิถีเรียงหมอน, kept for weddings, falls on waxing days 7, 10, 13 and waning days 4, 8, 10, 14. Finally, the จันทร์ดับ, the last day of the lunar month, is advised against for ceremonies.

   On top of this come the customs of each occasion, kept where several Thai sources agree: Tuesday and Saturday are "hard days" (วันแข็ง) on which astrologers do not set a time for a happy ceremony, unless they are the year's ธงชัย or อธิบดี (Saturday in 2026); people do not marry or get engaged on a Wednesday, and Thursday, the teachers' day, is rarely chosen; people do not cut their hair on a Wednesday; for weddings, the even lunar months (2, 4, 6) and the 9th (เก้า, which echoes ก้าวหน้า, "progress") are sought after and the 12th avoided (Thai PBS); ordinations preferably take place in the two months before เข้าพรรษา. Holy days and major festivals are flagged: days of merit, sometimes with no alcohol sales.

   With your day of birth, the tool reads your ทักษา (the same wheel as our Thai birth day and lucky colour tools): the planet of each weekday sits in one of its eight houses. Each occasion has its helpful houses: ศรี (fortune) and อุตสาหะ (work) for a business, มูละ (foundations, home) for moving house or a car, ศรี and บริวาร (spouse) for a wedding, มนตรี (patrons) and อายุ for an ordination, เดช (authority) for a contract, อายุ for travel or a haircut. The day that falls on your กาลกิณี house is best avoided, as almanacs advise; no other good point makes up for it.

   This is a simplified, cautious version. An astrologer also works out the exact time (ฤกษ์ยาม) from the horoscopes of the people involved, the Moon's lunar mansion and eclipses; schools differ, and a press table may follow other rules. The tool shows the year's ธงชัย ยาม as a guide, not a replacement. Everything is computed in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. These are matters of belief: they promise neither luck nor success, and a day that suits your family matters as much as the calendar.

Frequently asked questions

What are Wan Thong Chai and Wan Athibodi?

They are the two lucky days of the year's กาลโยค. วันธงชัย, the "victory banner day", is held to be the best day to start a business, move house or compete. วันอธิบดี, the day of authority, comes next: it is chosen for matters of prestige, stability and people. Both change every year, on เถลิงศก day around 16 April.

Which days are Thong Chai and Athibodi in 2026?

For CS 1388, from 16 April 2026 to 15 April 2027, the กาลโยค gives ธงชัย on Monday, อธิบดี on Saturday, อุบาทว์ on Sunday and โลกาวินาศ on Monday. Monday is therefore both lucky and unlucky: the tool rates it "mixed" and favours Saturdays, taking the other rules into account.

What should you avoid on Wan Ubat or Wan Lokawinat?

By tradition, no happy ceremony is set on these days: weddings, house-warmings, shop openings or taking delivery of a new car. วันอุบาทว์ is said to bring misfortune to people, วันโลกาวินาศ to places, property and groups. Everyday life goes on as usual.

How do you choose a day for a Thai house-warming (Khuen Ban Mai)?

Pick the "Moving house" occasion: the tool looks for วันธงชัย and วันอธิบดี and ดิถีมหาสิทธิโชค days, rules out วันอุบาทว์, วันโลกาวินาศ, the จันทร์ดับ and the hard days (Tuesday, Saturday, unless they are the year's ธงชัย or อธิบดี) and, with your day of birth, favours the days of your มูละ house. For the exact moving-in time and the ceremony with monks, ask your temple or an astrologer.

Which lunar month is best for a Thai wedding?

Tradition prefers the even months (the 2nd, 4th and above all 6th lunar month), symbols of life as a couple, and the 9th month, because เก้า sounds like ก้าวหน้า, progress. The 12th month is avoided, and some families do not marry during Buddhist Lent. The day itself should not be a Wednesday, and a ดิถีเรียงหมอน is sought after.

Can you get a haircut on a Wednesday in Thailand?

It is the most widely shared belief in Thailand: you do not cut your hair on a Wednesday, and many barbers and salons close that day. The tool therefore marks every Wednesday as "avoid" for a haircut. For the other days no rule is agreed on, so it uses the กาลโยค and your ทักษา.

Why does my result differ from another calendar?

Thai astrology schools do not all combine the same rules, and many published calendars add a ฤกษ์ยาม (an exact time) worked out by an astrologer. Our tool shows every rule it uses and its source, so you can compare. For an important ceremony, have the day and time confirmed by an astrologer or your temple.
