Auspicious C-section date planner (ฤกษ์ผ่าคลอด)
Many Thai families ask for a ฤกษ์, an auspicious moment, before a planned caesarean. This planner starts from the only thing that truly matters, the medical window set by your doctor, then reads each day in that window through Thai tradition: the year's วันธงชัย and วันอธิบดี, the วันอุบาทว์ and วันโลกาวินาศ to avoid, the baby's birth day and Buddha, the parents' กาลกิณี days, the Chinese sign and the Thai ราศี. You get a colour-coded timeline, a ranking explained line by line and the traditional time slots to discuss with your care team. The doctor always has the final say.

Auspicious C-section date planner (ฤกษ์ผ่าคลอด)
How it works
Everything starts with the due date. If you do not know it, the tool works it out from the first day of your last period using Naegele's rule (280 days, adjusted for cycle length), just like our due date calculator. It then gives the gestational age of every day in weeks and days (39+2, for example).
The default window runs from 39+0 to 40+0 weeks. For a planned caesarean with no medical reason, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG Committee Opinion 559 on caesarean delivery on maternal request and 765 on avoiding non-medically indicated early-term deliveries) advises against delivery before 39 completed weeks, because babies born earlier have more breathing problems and neonatal unit stays. In Thailand, the Ministry of Public Health asks hospitals to follow the principles of the Royal Thai College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RTCOG) and stresses that caesareans without a medical indication should not be encouraged. If your doctor sets a different window for a medical reason, enter it: that window always comes first.
The traditional core is the กาลโยค (kala yoga), worked out each year from the จุลศักราช, the Thai Chula Sakarat era (Buddhist year minus 1181), which turns over at เถลิงศก around 16 April. Following the method of Thai astrology manuals: ธงชัย = CS × 10 + 3, อธิบดี = CS divided by 498 (remainder), อุบาทว์ = CS × 10 + 2, โลกาวินาศ = CS + 1120; the remainder when divided by 7 gives the weekday (1 = Sunday) and the remainder by 8 gives the ยาม, or time slot. For the Thai year 2569 (CS 1388, 16 April 2026 to 15 April 2027) this gives ธงชัย on Monday, อธิบดี on Saturday, อุบาทว์ on Sunday and โลกาวินาศ on Monday, matching the calendars published by the Thai press. When a day is both auspicious and inauspicious, most almanacs put caution first: the tool marks it as mixed and never ranks it at the top.
The family's wishes come next. A baby delivered by daytime caesarean takes the calendar weekday as birth day (there is no Wednesday night, which starts at 6 pm). The tool adds points for the day you hope for, removes points for each parent's กาลกิณี day (the last role on the ทักษา wheel counted from their birth day) and, if you enter their birth years, flags the Chinese sign that clashes (ชง) with a parent's. The ราศี is the sidereal sign of the Sun, the same calculation as our Thai zodiac tool. The points are listed for every day: nothing is hidden.
Time slots are the eight daytime ยาม of 90 minutes each, starting at 6 am. The year's กาลโยค also assigns a ยาม to each of its four markers: for 2569, ยาม 3 (9:00 to 10:30) for ธงชัย and ยาม 8 (16:30 to 18:00) for อธิบดี, preferred by tradition; ยาม 2 (7:30 to 9:00) for อุบาทว์ and ยาม 4 (10:30 to 12:00) for โลกาวินาศ, best avoided. Hospitals operate to their own theatre schedule, so simply ask whether one of the preferred slots is possible.
Sources and limits: the กาลโยค method as set out in the Thai Wikipedia article กาลโยค (worked examples checked for CS 1369 and 1388), the วันธงชัย and วันอธิบดี calendars published by the Thai press (Thairath, Amarin TV, Thansettakij), the ทักษา wheel of Thai astrology manuals, ACOG Committee Opinions 559 and 765, and the position of the Thai Ministry of Public Health. Astrologers do not all agree (some add the lunar ดิถี or the 27 lunar mansions); the tool uses the most common reading, by weekday, and says so. These are cultural beliefs: no date improves a child's health or future.

- How many weeks before a planned C-section can be scheduled?
- Without a medical reason, international obstetric guidance (ACOG) sets the threshold at 39 completed weeks (39+0). Before that, newborns have a higher risk of breathing difficulties. Your doctor may suggest an earlier date for a medical reason, and then their date is the one that counts. The tool starts at 39 weeks by default.
- How do Thai families choose a ฤกษ์ผ่าคลอด?
- First ask the doctor for the possible window and the days they operate. Enter them in the tool with your due date: it colours each day by the year's กาลโยค, your preferred birth day and the parents' กาลกิณี days, then ranks the dates with the points shown. Keep two or three possible dates and suggest them to the care team.
- Is it bad to give birth on a วันอุบาทว์ or วันโลกาวินาศ?
- Not at all. By tradition these days are avoided for ceremonies people can schedule, but a baby born on one has nothing to fear. If the doctor decides the birth should happen that day, the health of mother and baby comes before any ฤกษ์.
- Which days are วันธงชัย and วันอธิบดี in 2026 to 2027?
- For the Thai year 2569 (CS 1388, 16 April 2026 to 15 April 2027), the กาลโยค gives ธงชัย on Monday and อธิบดี on Saturday, with อุบาทว์ on Sunday and โลกาวินาศ on Monday. As Monday is both ธงชัย and โลกาวินาศ, most almanacs treat it as mixed, so by this reading Saturday (อธิบดี) is the only fully auspicious weekday that year.
- What time of day is best for a C-section in Thai tradition?
- Tradition favours the ยาม (90-minute slots from 6 am) linked to ธงชัย and อธิบดี in the year's กาลโยค and avoids those of อุบาทว์ and โลกาวินาศ. The tool shows them for the day you pick. The real time depends on the theatre schedule and the mother's condition: a lucky slot is a wish, not a requirement.
- What if labour starts before the chosen date?
- It happens often: many women have contractions or their waters break before the booked date. Go to hospital straight away, as agreed with your doctor. Many Thai families then say the baby has chosen its own ฤกษ์.
- Which birth day should I choose for my baby?
- Each day has its own Buddha, colour and planet. Many parents pick a day that is not กาลกิณี for them, or the birth day of a grandparent. There is no single best day for everyone: the tool lets you tick the days you would like and shows the card for each day (colour, Buddha, animal).
