52 stones

Choose a stone to see its signs of authenticity and common fakes.

Never do this

  • Scratch the stone, or a window with it
  • Hold it to a flame or lighter
  • Pour acid or vinegar on it
  • Break or file off a piece

These tests damage the stone and give no reliable answer.

Having a stone tested

In Thailand, GIT (the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand) in Bangkok offers gem testing. A recognised laboratory tells natural, treated and synthetic stones apart with instruments no home test can replace.

Crystal authenticity checker

How it works

  1. Choose the stone: the tool shows the signs of a natural stone and the common fakes found in reliable sources (GIA laboratory notes, Wikipedia, geology.com). Tests that come only from sellers or forums are marked unverified.

  2. Then answer a few observation questions you can do at home or in a shop without damaging the stone: a magnifier, daylight and, for hard stones that tolerate it, a cotton pad with acetone.

  3. The price is compared with prices seen in October 2026 in Thai online shops. Less than half the lowest price seen is a warning sign; a price within the range is no proof of authenticity.

  4. The summary is never a verdict: it counts warning signs and points to check. Only a gem laboratory can confirm whether a stone is natural, treated or synthetic.

  5. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is stored. The tool suggests no destructive test: scratching, burning or applying acid damages the stone.

These tools give general information. They do not replace the advice of a doctor or a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my crystal is real?
No home test is certain. The best clues are the price compared with the market, no round bubbles, natural shades and inclusions, and a seller who discloses treatments. For certainty, you need a laboratory.
Does the cold-to-the-touch test work?
Quartz often feels colder than glass, but no reliable source confirms this test and it depends on room temperature. The tool does not use it.
What is a dyed or reconstituted stone?
A dyed stone has been given an artificial colour: howlite sold as turquoise, or brightly coloured agate. A reconstituted stone is made of powder or chips bound with resin. It is not fraud when disclosed, but the price should be much lower.
Where can I have a stone tested in Thailand?
GIT (the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand) in Bangkok offers gem testing. Recognised private laboratories exist too; always ask for a written report with a number you can verify.
Is a certificate enough?
A certificate from a recognised laboratory is the best guarantee for a precious gem. Check the laboratory's name and the report number with the laboratory itself, as fake certificates do circulate.
